Span House 1

I have owned and refurbished two Span houses in Blackheath, South London (1 and 3 on this site). They are typical of the small development housing designed in the late 50s and 60s by Span Developments formed by architect Eric Lyons who was the subject of a RIBA exhibition in 2008.

The first house contained many original features which were maintained, but it required extensive reworking and was updated with a new kitchen and bathroom design. New custom designed furniture was sensitively introduced in addition to classics to fit with the mid-century period of the architecture. The building benefits from fully glazed elevations to the front and rear ground floor which blur the boundaries with external gardens, bringing in plenty of natural light. Integration of these houses into the equally well considered landscapes was a unique and key feature of this radical housing concept of the period.
